Plasma pressure effect on Alfvén cascade eigenmodes

چکیده
Tokamak plasmas with reversed magnetic shear are prone to the excitation of Alfvén cascade !AC" eigenmodes by energetic particles. These modes exhibit a quasiperiodic pattern of predominantly upward frequency sweeping. Observations also reveal that the AC spectral lines sometimes bend at low frequencies, which is a significant deviation from the shear Alfvén wave dispersion relation. This paper shows that the underlying reasons for such bending are the finite pressure of the plasma and the geodesic curvature that precludes shear Alfvén perturbations from being strictly incompressible. In addition to the geodesic effect, there are two other pressure effects on shear Alfvén waves, which are the convection in the presence of an equilibrium pressure gradient and the toroidicity-induced coupling between shear Alfvén waves and acoustic modes. An analytical treatment of the problem enables a parametric comparison of all three mechanisms. The key distinction between the geodesic compressibility and the acoustic coupling is that geodesic compression occurs without plasma displacement along the magnetic-field lines. As a result, the mode phase velocity is greater than the ion thermal velocity even in an isothermal plasma, which allows the mode to avoid a strong ion Landau damping. Plasma temperature diagnostics via magnetohydrodynamic spectroscopy employing the low-frequency part of the ACs is suggested. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. #DOI: 10.1063/1.2130692$

Experimental Studies and Analysis of Alfvén Eigenmodes in Alcator C-Mod
Alfvén cascades (ACs) or equivalently, reverse shear Alfvén eigenmodes (RSAE) have been observed in Alcator C-Mod during current ramp experiments in the presence of intense ICRF driven energetic minority tails. These experiments were carried out at ITER relevant densities and magnetic field. Phase contrast imaging (PCI) and magnetic pick-up coils have been used for detecting the Alfvén eigenmod...

New fluctuation and fast-ion diagnostics provide a wealth of data about fast-ion instabilities during neutral beam injection into DIII-D. Toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE), reversed-shear induced Alfvén eigenmodes (RSAE), and compressional Alfvén eigenmodes are observed. Owing to differing spatial sensitivities, the measured spectra differ greatly for different diagnostics. In plasmas...
متن کاملTheory and observations of low frequency eigenmodes due to Alfvén acoustic coupling in toroidal fusion plasmas2
New theory developments and experimental observations of two classes of energetic particle driven instabilities are reported. First is a new class of global MHD solutions resulting from coupling of the Alfvénic and acoustic fundamental MHD oscillations due to geodesic curvature. These modes, predicted theoretically and numerically and called Beta-induced Alfvén-Acoustic Eigenmodes (BAAEs), have...

A dispersive Landau-fluid model is used to study the decay and modulational instabilities of circularlypolarized Alfvén waves in a collisionless plasma, as well as their nonlinear developments. Comparisons are presented with the drift-kinetic approximation for the dispersionless regime and with hybrid simulations in more general conditions. The effect of the nature of the instability on particl...
